A Parent’s Guide to Sizing Kids’ Snowboard Boots

Parents seeking kids' snowboard boots should focus on sizing, fit, and cost.

Looking to get your little shredder out on the mountain but struggling to understand the sizing on kids’ snowboard boots? We get it, the whole process can be confusing. That’s why the Burton Guides got together to create this quick explainer on what you need to look for when selecting snowboard boots for children. Remember, properly sized gear is a big factor in getting kids to feel comfortable on the snow and fall in love with snowboarding.

Things to Consider when Shopping for Youth Snowboard Boots

Snowboarding is the perfect family activity and Burton is proud to produce several options of snowboard boots for kids of all ages. So, if you’re just starting your search for the right pair, there’s three main things you need to consider: sizing, fit, and cost.

Note: Burton Mini-Grom and Burton Grom Boa boots offer size markings on the bottom of the outsole and you can hold the bottom of the boot up to your child's foot and see how it will line up with the internal fit.

Size “C” Kids’ Snowboard Boots

Boots that are marked as size “C” are the smallest youth boots available. In general, size “C” will be equivalent to “T” (toddler) sizing in the United States. Size “C” boots are specifically designed and built to provide warmth and comfort for the growing feet of very small children (and are typically priced accordingly).

Size “K” Kids’ Snowboard Boots

Boots that are marked as size “K” are non-toddler youth boots and are mostly just smaller versions of adult boots and there is often confusion about this overlap. To make it easy, just remember that the largest youth boots are the equivalent size of the smallest adult boots. For example, a size “7K” youth boot is the same size as a size “7” men’s boot.

“K” sized boots are the same for girls and boys, which means that they will run slightly larger than a regular girl’s size shoe.

Mondo vs. US Sizing

As you shop for boots it is possible that you will come across Mondo sizing, which is short for Mondopoint. Mondo sizing is mostly found in ski boots today (but has also been found on some snowboard boots) and is essentially the length of your foot in centimeters.

Fit & Cost

When deciding between boot sizes, it’s important to factor in cost alongside fit. Fortunately, many of our mini-grom and grom boots feature Room to Grow technology that allows the boots to grow one size larger by removing the footbed. This feature helps extend the life of your youth boots (because we all know that children grow quickly).

Also, with youth boots it is better to err towards a slightly roomier fit that can be filled out with an extra pair of socks; not only does this help keep those little toes warm on cold days, it will potentially allow you to get an additional season out of your gear.
